Approved Workshop Scheme

Caravan and motorhome servicing

The Approved Workshop Scheme is a joint enterprise between the NCC (National Caravan Council), The Caravan and Motorhome Club and The Camping and Caravanning Club. Founded in 1978, AWS is the UK’s largest group of independently assessed workshops and the benchmark for motorhome and touring caravan servicing in the UK.

The scheme has over 550 fixed and mobile Approved Workshops across the country. All member workshops pass an annual inspection by a team of independent assessors to ensure they comply with the Scheme’s high standards.

What you can expect from an approved workshop

Approved Workshops use fully qualified caravan and motorhome servicing professionals.

Each workshop must meet high standards of competency (the technician’s formal qualifications) and comply with an industry Code of Practice.

AWS members commit to:

  • display a detailed list of prices and labour rates
  • provide an estimate for any additional servicing or repair work over £150
  • give a realistic estimated time for completion and collection
  • use genuine spare parts where available
  • carry out using skill, care and professional judgement
  • always provide you with a checklist of work done
  • not start work without your express authority
  • contact you for authority to continue with additional work
  • notify you in writing of faults which are not fixed, with an honest assessment of the urgency of the repairs required

Pre-owned pre-purchase inspections

An AWS pre-purchase inspection on a used vehicle provides a detailed report on the visual and operating condition of a used caravan or motorhome. The inspection helps to identify hidden problems which could lead to costly repairs.

Every inspection includes:

  • a safety check of critical elements
  • gas check
  • full damp inspection
  • caravan wheels and tyres inspection

Commissioning an AWS inspection before you buy a used caravan or motorhome provides peace of mind against hidden repair costs.

CHRiS total-loss re-registration inspections

  • Category S and N insurance write-off caravans can appear back on the road
  • Category S is a caravan write-off when the cost of repairs exceeds the caravan’s value
  • Category N also means the caravan is repairable, but the costs are higher than the vehicle’s value

Total-loss inspections allow the owner of a written-off and repaired caravan to re-register with the Central Registration & Identification Scheme (CHRiS).
